Stable nanobridge formation in h110i gold nanowires under tensile deformation

چکیده
We present atomistic simulations of h110i oriented gold nanowires under tensile deformation. We find that h110i gold nanowires tend to form elongated, stable nanobridges upon necking, which is in agreement with previous experimental observations. In addition, the simulations reveal that the formation of a high strength multishell lattice structure during the plastic deformation of the h110i wires may account for the stability of the elongated nanobridges observed experimentally. 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. An Ultra-Stable Cu Nanowire under Thermo-Mechanical Loading: A Molecular Dynamic Study
We report on the formation of a stable Body-Centered Heptahedral (BCH) crystalline nanobridge structure of diameter ~ 1nm under high strain rate tensile loading to a <100> Cu nanowire. Extensive Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations are performed. Six different cross-sectional dimensions of Cu nanowires are analyzed, i.e. 0.3615 x 0.3615 nm, 0.723 x 0.723 nm, 1.0845 x 1.0845 nm, 1.446 x 1.446 nm,...
متن کاملModeling inelasticity and failure in gold nanowires
We present numerical simulations of gold nanowires under tensile loading at various strain rates and wire sizes at room temperature. The simulations were performed using molecular dynamics modeling the gold nanowires using various forms of the embedded-atom method, and concentrated on investigating the yield and fracture properties of the nanowires. It is clearly demonstrated that the accurate ...
متن کاملSuperplastic deformation of defect-free Au nanowires via coherent twin propagation.
We report that defect-free Au nanowires show superplasticity on tensile deformation. Evidences from high-resolution electron microscopes indicated that the plastic deformation proceeds layer-by-layer in an atomically coherent fashion to a long distance. Furthermore, the stress-strain curve provides full interpretation of the deformation. After initial superelastic deformation, the nanowire show...
متن کاملMechanical Failure Mode of Metal Nanowires: Global Deformation versus Local Deformation
It is believed that the failure mode of metal nanowires under tensile loading is the result of the nucleation and propagation of dislocations. Such failure modes can be slip, partial slip or twinning and therefore they are regarded as local deformation. Here we provide numerical and theoretical evidences to show that global deformation is another predominant failure mode of nanowires under tens...
متن کاملGold Nanobridge Stabilized by Surface Structure
We formed gold nanowires using electron-beam irradiation in an ultrahigh vacuum electron microscope. The dimensions of these nanowires were 0.8–3 nm in thickness and 5–10 nm in length. The nanowires showed lasting stability. We propose a structure model for a nanowire with a thickness of 2 nm. The model is represented by a hexagonal prism; the surface layer of the prism has a hexagonalclose-pac...
